2022 HHSC-DHHS Summer Retreat
at the University of Houston
We are BACK!! You are invited to attend an IN PERSON Summer training for pre-certified sign language interpreters. This event will be held in person on the beautiful University of Houston main campus. There will not be an option for virtual or remote learning. Goodbye Zoom!
The training will be conducted in ASL (with spoken English used for ASL-to-English practice). A limited number of participants will be invited to attend. Special thanks to DHHS for sponsoring this training!
Cancellation policy: We rely on an accurate attendance count to make important arrangements for this training. Cancellations will not be granted a refund of the application processing fee. Application processing fees are not transferable.

What can you expect? You'll get:
- Group and individual training in small group settings;
- The opportunity to take TWO mock certification tests;
- An evaluation of your performance on the mock tests;
- Individual feedback session for review of your skills;
- An explanation of the BEI testing process;
- Strategies for test-taking;
- Focus on ASL-to-English and Sight Translation skills; and
- Practice materials for ongoing skill development.
COVID protocol: Refunds will be provided for those that submit a positive COVID test to the event organizer on or by July 31st. The University of Houston continues to encourage the wearing of face coverings, especially for individuals who are not fully vaccinated, but consistent with Governor Abbott’s May 18, 2021 and July 29, 2021 Executive Orders, face coverings are not required on campus.
Do NOT attend this training if you have had community exposure that could necessitate self-quarantine including the following:
- You have had “close contact” with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19, and with respect to that person you were within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period.
- You have returned from international travel and are NOT up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines.
You will be asked to complete a COVID screening each morning before beginning the training. This will help protect all participants and trainers and minimize the risk of infection.
Meet your Retreat Guides:
Sharon Hill is the Program Director for the University of Houston’s ASL Interpreting Program. She has been a freelance interpreter for 26 years and her specialty is interpreting in high-stakes settings. She is currently finishing the writing of her dissertation this summer to obtain a PhD from the University of Birmingham - England in Applied Linguistics. She holds a Texas BEI Master, Level IV, and Medical level certifications and formerly served as Chair of the BEI Advisory Board.
Martha Scribner -Mnich, aka Marfy, is a Deaf child of Deaf parents growing up in the Midwestern state, is currently living in Rochester, New York. She is a Deaf Interpreter working at University of Rochester – Strong Memorial Hospital working for the Patient Care. One of her professional accomplishments was establishing English and Reading for Deaf students taught by Deaf professors at Houston Community College. Marfy enjoys traveling and scrapbooking.
Rita Lee Wedgeworth has a Bachelor of Science degree and holds the Texas BEI Master and Texas Court Interpreter Certifications, with over 30 years of experience in the Deaf and Interpreting communities. Her grandparents were Deaf and mother was a sign language interpreter, who later became a clinical psychologist working only with the Deaf community. She has held several board positions in the Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf (TSID) and the Greater Houston Interpreters for the Deaf (GHID).
Rachel Kleist is a Certified Deaf Interpreter who is currently living in California. She holds RID Deaf Interpreter Certification and is a credentialed Disaster Response Interpreter. She works as a freelance interpreter primarily in Sacramento and the surrounding areas. She is also an adjunct professor at American River College.
Terra Jackson has been a certified interpreter for 18 years. She holds both a national certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and a BEI Master from the State of Texas. She completed her interpreter training program at Lansing Community College in Lansing, MI. Her specialties include sign-to-voice, post-secondary, and deaf-blind interpreting.
Cali Luckett, NIC, BEI Master, QMHI. During the past 20 years Cali has worked as an employee, staff interpreter and freelancer primarily in the Houston area. She works as an interpreter, educator, trainer and consultant. Her career has taken her from the classroom to the boardroom and many places in between. She’s an avid traveler, cyclist and wanna be foodie.
